There are two paths generally that a person will choose from when they become Medicare Eligible.  

One option is keeping your Original Medicare as your primary health insurance or first payor and then taking a Supplemental plan or a Medigap plan from a private health insurance company and this will be your second payor toward your medical bills. These plans are lettered plans A thru N; with a few inbetween that are no longer available. To best understand the difference between these lettered plans - it is recommended you discuss these plans with a licensed agent who can fully explain how these plans work and be able to offer the most competitively priced plans in your state. Medicare supplements or Medigap insurance to do not cover things like prescription drugs, dental, vision, hearing and OTC goods. These are strictly medical plans that cover Medicare approved medical care.  

Another option would be Medicare Advantage plans. This type of insurance is offered by private health insurance companies. When a person takes a medicare advantage plan with or without drug coverage - they are electing to have a private health insurance company "manage" their Original Medicare. With these plans comes predictable out of pocket copays and a maximum out of pocket that you could incur in a calendar year. These plans often times include prescription drug coverage, dental, vision, gym membership and OTC items. Some of these plans even can you give you money back toward your Part B premium! It is very important that you fully understand how these plans work before you take one. You must have a clear understanding the difference between Supplemental insurance and medicare Advantage.
